Erich Maria RemarqueThis is the birthday of Erich Maria Remarque, born in 1898 and author of ImWesten Nichts Neues (All Quiet on the Western Front). To celebrate that event: When he was a small child in Germany Erich Maria lived on a farm. The children were transported to the school in town by a man who was paid to drive them in his horse-drawn wagon. One school day his wagon broke down so he hitched up his smaller buggy and started shuttling all the farm children to school. Erich and his brothers and sisters were the last to be picked up and there was not room in the buggy for all of them. Since he was the oldest he volunteered to wait to be picked up later. Some time later a neighbor across the road, who's own children had been picked up earlier, looked out and saw Erich still standing there, obviously forgotten by the man who was supposed to come back for him. The neighbor turned and told his wife "That last Remarque was uncalled for." |
